Renewable Energy Growth Continues At A Blistering Pace

As originally published on forbes.com. Renewable energy continued its blistering growth pace in 2019, globally increasing by 12.2% over 2018. Over the past decade, renewable energy consumption has grown at an average annual rate of 13.7%. Renewables were the only category of energy that grew globally at double digits over the past decade. For perspective, in 2009 the world consumed 8.2 exajoules of renewable energy. In 2019, that had nearly quadrupled to 29.0 exajoules. The Review breaks the consumption of renewables into two broad categories. The “Renewables” category consists of wind...

Saranac solar project to be up and running by November

As originally published on nny360.com. On a recent July morning, solar panels bent across a stretch of land north of the village like a Richard Serra sculpture. A flock of geese wandered among wood chips underneath one row of the 72-cell silicon panels — sandwiched by thin layers of glass and rigged onto sturdy aluminum frames — that will soon provide renewable energy to the community. After finally breaking ground in May, Saranac Lake Community Solar is now taking subscriptions and is slated to be up and running by early November. And by spring, the wood chips will be replaced by...

A Farm Stand for Electricity

As originally published on suncommunitynews.com. Imagine sashaying down to the local farmers market one weekend for chard, tomatoes and a little locally sourced electricity. While a bit of a stretch, obviously, this scenario is not as far-fetched as it might seem. Indeed, Saranac Lake Community Solar plans to set up this summer at the local market to entice subscribers to sign up for energy from the sun, generated just a few miles north of the village on Rt. 86. Community solar is part of a growing energy model across the country targeting users who are interested in green energy, but...

US Solar Plants Now Expected to Run for More Than 30 Years: Berkeley Lab

Big solar plants are getting cheaper to run and expectations for their useful operational lives keep getting longer, according to a new survey of U.S. solar industry professionals. By the end of 2019, a cumulative total of 76 gigawatts of solar had been installed in the United States, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association and Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables. The learning-by-doing involved with growing the sector is reflected in steadily improving performance benchmarks. Read...

Tap into Locally Generated Green Power

The first Community Solar Farm in the Adirondacks is expected to start generating energy in 2020. Sunvestment Energy Group and RER Energy are collaborating to build and operate a community solar farm in Saranac Lake on state Route 86, just past Lake Colby. The property is owned by one of AdkAction’s founding board members and past board Chairman Lee Keet. Lee purchased the 22-acre property back in 1999 because Walmart was looking to build a store on the site and he thought it was in the best interests of the community to keep the megaretailer out. Now, instead of having a Walmart on the...
